I’ve always loved creating a bucket list.

The new year has begun and I am ready to accomplish things this year. Of course, everyone wants to start the new year with new goals, and what better way to do that than to create one for the new year.

So for today’s post, I will be dishing out some points that you should consider before you dive into creating your goal-smashing bucket list.

Why should you have a bucket list?

Before I answer why first I should answer WHAT a bucket list is.

Bucket lists is a list of things you want to do before you die.

I know it sounds extreme but putting it into perspective, there is no telling how long we will live. So as the saying goes, live every day as if it’s your last. It is uncertain when our time will come and it would be a waste of time going day by day going through the mundane tasks of life.

The purpose of bucket lists is to live your life with intention and purpose. It gives you a reason to live a meaningful life by setting goals in your life.

A bucket list can be anything:

  • Wanting to travel (in general or a specific place)
  • Learn a new language
  • Open a business
  • Go skydiving

Just to name a few things.

These are basically things that you desire to accomplish in your life. And they don’t have to be big and grand. It can be small and simple.

Brainstorm

This is the first thing you should do when you’re creating your bucket list. Grab some paper and pencil or type it out.

Write out everything that you would like to accomplish in your life. Be big and bold or keep it simple. This is YOUR bucket list.

This is the time where you get to word-vomit everything that you would like to do in your life. Nothing has to be perfect at this phase because you are just writing down what’s coming to mind.

Write down your desires, things you’ve been too scared to do, achievements you want to accomplish, etc.

Set yourself no restrictions.

Edit your list and figure out what is most important to you that you would like to accomplish

Once you’ve finished brainstorming, this is where you get to narrow down your list to the things that you truly want to accomplish in your life.

Refine your list to things that you find important. What item from your list sparks that I DEFINITELY want to do this before I die?

Which items on your bucket list are going to enhance your life? Think about the things that you can look back on and say “I’m so glad I did that”.

Be realistic

Now you may create a list that may be out of your reach. Something to keep in mind is to keep your bucket list realistic.

Be sure you’re at a point in your life where you are able to check off your bucket list. I’m not saying to not be ambitious.

For instance, say you want to spend the year traveling the world. Do you have the finances to sustain you traveling the world for a year straight? How are you going to show up at your job? Do you have the proper documents to travel?

Consider how realistic your list is to YOU because yes anything on a bucket list can be accomplished, as long as you are in the right place to do it.

Be diverse

Definitely branch out and try new things. Things that you would not otherwise try.

For example, I would definitely want to live in another country for some time. Maybe the UK or Germany. Up until recently, I always thought that I would live in Texas for the rest of my life but now I’m thinking moving abroad wouldn’t be so bad. Many people do it all the time so why shouldn’t I?

Get out of your comfort zone and be daring! You never know what may come out of those opportunities if you don’t try.

Hold yourself accountable

Very similar to a vision board (check out the post here), a bucket list helps to hold you accountable.

I think it’s a great way to keep yourself focused on what you would like to accomplish in your life.

Sure, you will stray away from your bucket list, and what you find important may change from time to time. That’s ok! Your bucket list can change with you too.

Make it pretty!

I love using Canva for creating any graphics, especially Pinterest graphics. So you’re a digital person, I definitely recommend using Canva to create your bucket list.
